# Which Quiz Question Type Should You Use? A Reproducible Decision Tree

A product-neutral decision tree and compatibility matrix for choosing multiple choice, multiple select, true or false, numeric or open response.

## The direct answer

Choose the question type from the evidence the participant must produce. Use single-answer multiple choice for selecting one best response, multiple select only when several options must be judged together, true or false for one precise claim in low-stakes checks, numeric response for a value with a defined tolerance, and open response when the participant must construct, justify or explain an answer. No format is best for every objective.

Key findings

## What matters most

These conclusions define the decision boundary used throughout the guide.

- The required evidence comes before convenience or automatic grading.
- A format fails when it gives away the evidence the objective requires the participant to produce.
- The decision tree records purpose, stakes and marking constraints so another reviewer can reproduce the choice.01

## What is a quiz question type?

A quiz question type is the response structure a participant receives, such as selecting one option, selecting several options, judging a statement, entering a number or constructing a written answer. The format controls what evidence can be observed and how consistently it can be marked.

Reader job: this method serves classroom and self-study quizzes and low-stakes formal training. Marketing, publishing and live-event teams can use the same logic for knowledge checks, but preference questions and audience polls do not have correct answers and should not be presented as assessments.

## The five-step question-type decision tree

- Must the participant construct an explanation, argument or process? Use open response. If a short exact term is sufficient, use short answer with an explicit accepted-answer rule.
- Must the participant calculate or enter an exact value? Use numeric response and define units, rounding and tolerance before delivery.
- Must the participant identify every valid option? Use multiple select, state that more than one answer may be correct and define partial-credit rules.
- Must the participant choose one best response from plausible alternatives? Use single-answer multiple choice.
- Is the evidence only a judgment about one precise proposition? True or false may work for a low-stakes check. Otherwise, rewrite the objective or use a richer format.

If two branches appear to fit, choose the format that asks the participant to produce the evidence named in the objective. Carnegie Mellon University's [exam guidance](https://www.cmu.edu/teaching/assessment/assesslearning/creatingexams.html) gives the same governing principle: item types should reflect learning objectives.

The University of Waterloo's [question-type guide](https://uwaterloo.ca/centre-for-teaching-excellence/catalogs/tip-sheets/exam-questions-types-characteristics-and-suggestions) documents the practical strengths and weaknesses of seven common formats. Its true-or-false guidance also notes the two-option format's 50% chance success under pure guessing.

## Record the decision so another reviewer can reproduce it

This is a registered editorial method, version 1.0, verified 11 August 2026. It was synthesized from the source record below and checked against the six format examples in the compatibility matrix. It has not been validated as a psychometric instrument.

## Three worked decisions

Explain why a policy exception appliesThe verb “explain” requires constructed reasoning, so use open response with a rubric. A multiple-choice item could test recognition of the exception, but not the participant's ability to construct the explanation.Calculate a percentage to one decimal placeUse numeric response. Record the unit, rounding rule and acceptable tolerance before publishing.Choose the safest next action in a scenarioUse single-answer multiple choice when one response is defensibly best and the distractors represent realistic errors. Apply the [12-point QA checklist](https://best-quiz-maker.com/blog/write-good-multiple-choice-questions) before piloting it.

Cornell's [question-design guidance](https://teaching.cornell.edu/teaching-resources/engaging-students/using-effective-questions-engage-students) distinguishes quick closed-ended checks from open-ended prompts that elicit expanded thinking and recommends aligning questions to the intended level of learning.

## Limitations and review boundary

The tree chooses a response format; it does not prove that the question set covers the domain, that scoring is fair or that results support a consequential inference. Automatic marking can improve consistency without making the underlying item appropriate.

For high-stakes education, employment, certification or regulated decisions, use qualified assessment review, pilot evidence and an administration plan appropriate to the consequences.
